An artist

He had undergone so many heartbreaks that he couldn’t afford to have any more. He had nobody with whom he could share these experiences. But he wanted to empty this baggage of pain. He had no idea what to do.

So, he thought of writing. And he wrote. He wrote so much that he thought why not publish it. After publishing it, people read it. And they appreciated his work so much, saying that they could relate to it.

His work exhibited pain in an acceptable form. He wrote gazals. All of us have some amount of pain within us. When we come across such things, a part of us can relate to it, in turn wanting some more of it. Pain can either make us or break us. It depends upon our perception and choice.

We can either internalise or externalise the pain. If we internalise it, we do harm to ourselves. Externalising it can be done in two forms, acceptable and unacceptable.

Unacceptable is when it is unhealthy in nature, like aggression and violence. But acceptable ways are healthier like writing songs poems stories, singing, playing a musical instrument, acting it out etc. That’s how most of our successful artists have a painful history behind.

Sublimation is what the Psychologists will call it. A mature type of defence mechanism which many of us use, but do not realise.

So, if you have any painful experience next time, do think of it as an opportunity to become an artist. It will surely make you and not break you.
